What’s So Great About the DeLonghi EN680.M Nespresso Lattissima Single-Serve Espresso Maker
Automatic Machine: If you’ve always dreamed of being your own barista but dislike the manual work of measuring, tamping and grinding, the Lattissima Single-Serve is the perfect compromise. This innovative machine uses Nespresso capsules so all you have to do is drop in a capsule, slide the milk container onto the front, set a cup on the tray and press the start button. Thanks to the patented ‘single touch’ hot milk system, all you have to do is secure the milk container, and the amount of steamed milk and coffee can be adjusted to your liking.
Technology: The Lattissima Single-Serve is not just any ordinary single-serve capsule machine. Instead, it has a lot of technology built into it that keeps this espresso maker a step ahead of the competition. A unique extraction system is what makes the perfect espresso without you having to lift a finger. Thanks to the 19-bars of pressure, all of the aromas are extracted for full-flavored cups of espresso with plenty of foamy crema. The patented IFD milk system is what makes the milk professional-grade just like the microfoam you get from the coffeehouse. The illuminated display panel is also technologically advanced and allows users to choose from multiple settings such as espresso coffee, long coffee and latte macchiato.
Single Touch Hot Milk System: While you can enjoy regular coffee with this machine, most people choose to make cappuccinos, espressos and latte macchiatos. To drink these beverages, you’ll want the help of a milk system. Fortunately for the Lattissima Single-Serve, the hot milk system is built into the machine and easy to use, whipping up professional-style beverages. It's ideal to keep the milk frother clean for the hottest temperatures and proper functioning of the machine. Also be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations of using cold skim milk, but not more than 2 percent milk.
What’s Not So Great About the DeLonghi EN680.M Nespresso Lattissima Single-Serve Espresso Maker?
Small Drip Tray: Although the adjustable drip tray is a nice touch, it doesn’t offer as much size variation as it promises. It’s hard to fit taller mugs on the espresso setting, and if you change the drip tray to the latte function, the mugs are too wide. If you do try to squeeze in a cup that doesn’t fit, you’ll want to watch over it to make sure it doesn’t fall off the machine and make a mess. One of the reasons for this may be because the machine is influenced by European coffee machines, which means that the most coffee you can make is still a small cup in American terms. Therefore, you may be better off using smaller cups instead of springing for the larger ones.
Temperature: A common complaint with the Lattissima Single-Serve is that the temperature of the milk never gets hot enough. Even those that love the machine complain about the temperature, which should come out hotter considering the price of this espresso maker. This is a common issue with automatic machines since you can’t control the temperature like you can with manual machines. It’s not just the temperature of the milk that comes out warm, but also the cappuccinos. Many people report that the cappuccino tastes lukewarm, even directly after brewing. To get your cappuccino to a better temperature, pre-warm your coffee mug beforehand or pop the coffee in the microwave after it’s done brewing.
Frother Maintenance: Although the milk frothing system is pretty spectacular, it requires a great deal of effort to keep it clean and working properly. For example, you’ll need to clean the frother with soap and water with every few cappuccinos made, which for some people may be every day or two. You should also never let the frother sit dirty for more than five minutes, as the milk can get stuck and will be that much harder to remove. DeLonghi recommends using skim milk and storing the milk container alone instead of with the frother. If you get in the habit of cleaning the frothing system regularly, you’ll be much happier with the performance of the Lattissima Single-Serve.
